Layer Up

In the infamous words of Mary Berry “It’s all about those layers”. At WSd, we use layers to beat the unpredictable weather and to keep your favourite purchases current and wearable, all year round…

The weather app is probably selected more frequently at the moment than beloved Instagram. Yet it is quite frankly as unreliable as its very subject. The solution to this daily problem is already hanging perfectly poised in all its whimsical glory…your fave summer playsuit. Don’t banish this little beauty to the back of the wardrobe to a lonely life of winter hibernation, instead, wear it over a thin long sleeved top. Vero Moda ease this transition to AW with their Sunset Funnel neck jumper, which provides an oh so desired cosiness but is thin enough to act as a base layer. Mink Pink’s Pretty Petals ruffle playsuit, with its V neck and short sleeves would make an ideal partner and teamed with a pair of luxurious opaque tights (we <3 DP’s) makes for an instant seasonal update! To toughen up the look, add flat boots such as Sol Sana Eddie with detachable harness. Finish with your favourite leather bag. The Sunset Funnel neck also looks great under strappy negligée type dresses, over summer dresses and with tube skirts. An all-rounder!

The cape may not have been Madonna’s greatest ally at the Brits, but it is most certainly ours this AW. It is ultra-wearable and allows complete freedom of movement which a chunky coat may not. The Vero Moda Dagmar cape comes in a bevy of autumnal shades and is an effortless throw-on staple. Why not layer on a couple to build up warmth, colour and your cape kudos. Counterbalance the soft wool with a pair of Vero Moda PU biker leggings to add some toughness to your swooshing cape power and show the world you mean business.

Crop tops were a huge look this SS and they’re sticking around to see us through AW in the form of the chunky knit jumper. The Somedays Lovin Strabo chunky knit is perfect for layering. Its boxy-cropped fit favours a fitted layer underneath, which creates a visual balance and prevents the eye from creating extra bulkiness where there is none!

Humble in its abiding toughness, reliability and versatility, the military shirt is a true fashion staple. The Somedays Lovin Catskills Disposal version is a core layering component and worn in whatever which way creates the perfect androgynous look. Layer it open over a basic tee to create a relaxed vibe, or wear buttoned with leather separates and heels to create a polished and sculpted look. A hint of army green collar peeking from beneath a soft jumper is another way to subtly build up layers while keeping things lightweight.

If you are worried that layering will lose your silhouette...then get waisted! Add a belt to your outfit to cinch things in at the waist and keep all those layers in check! Mix up textures and throw some studs into the wool mix. Look no further than the Becksöndergaard Sunshine Studs Belt (£49), which will allow you to layer without any bulkiness!
